Chyler Leigh Comes Out of The Closet Pride and Gay

Supergirl and Grey's Anatomy actor Chyler Leigh took inspiration from her character and came out of the closet

Chyler Leigh aka Alex Danvers of DC's Supergirl has come out of the closet. After the recent episode aired, Leigh took it to social media to openly associate herself with the community. This is indeed a proud queer moment, especially during the Pride month.

Leigh's coming out is not something that every straight star does. Not only that, but she also clarified how it is difficult to be on-screen queer character. This is because all the viewers may not be liberal enough to accept it, even within the family.

This coming out moment of the actor makes her one amongst the queers of Grey's Anatomy family. She played one of the most popular characters of the show, Lexie Grey.

Chyler Leigh's Inclusive Grey's Anatomy

Supergirl's Chyler Leigh's coming out is not the only queer moment in the history of Grey's. Grey's Anatomy has been inclusive since the start. Maker Shonda Rhimes ensured that the cast was colour-blind. The actors and characters were a delightful mix of races and ethnicities, making the show all the more interesting.

Not only that, Grey's Anatomy's storyline included queer love stories when it was not in vogue. Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins became one of the most-rooted for couples in the series.

Not only on the screen, but Grey's also had a no-nonsense hate policy behind the screens too. As per an Entertainment Weekly report, actor Isaiah Washington was asked to leave. He played the character of Preston Burke.

Apparently while having a heated argument with Patrick Dempsey, who played Derek Shepherd, Washington used a homophobic slur. This was with respect to TR Night, who played the role of George O'Malley. As a result, the script included his character's exit.

This also turned out be to the roadmap for one of the first real 'coming out' moments of the show. It was the first one in a series which now has 'Supergirl' Chyler Leigh added in it.

Anatomy of Inclusivity and Diversity

Soon after the press got wind of these rumours, TR Night came out of the closet. In fact, Washington's comments and Grey's environment pushed him towards the same. He admitted later on 'The Ellen Show,' 'I think when that happened, something shifted, and it became bigger than myself.'

Preston's eventual exit happened when his character leaves Cristina at the altar. Dr Erica Hahn was introduced. Ironically, she turns out to be the person Callie explores her queer identity with.

Callie and Arizona: A Story Made in Heaven

Callie Torres, one of the main characters, discovers her sexuality soon after her divorce with Night's O'Malley. Dr Erica Hahn, played by Brooke Smith, is the one who brings her out of the closet. Eventually, she finds her one true love in Arizona Robbins, played by Jessica Capshaw. Grey's not only showcased their love story's development but more. We saw Callie's eventual coming out to her traditional parents, and their beautiful marriage.

When Callie and Arizona parted ways, it was heartbreaking. But it was a beautiful and intense story.

Soon after, actress Sara Ramirez too came out as a bisexual.

Various Shades of Grey

Even before Chyler Leigh's 'Supergirl' coming out moment, her previous show Grey's Anatomy has shown us various shades of non-binary characters. Grey's has gone all out on genuine portrayal be it the homosexual soldiers or even two trans teens in love.

Grey's Anatomy's queer representation did not end with Callie and Arizona. Soon after, the new bunch of interns and residents flocked Grey-Sloan Memorial entered. Sparks flew between Levi Schmitt, played by an adorable and geeky Jake Borelli, and Nico Kim, played by Alex Landi. Not only was this a same-sex love story, but also had an added element of an interracial affair.

Chyler Leigh's coming out and direct association with the LGBTQ community stems from the inclusivity that Grey's built upon. It's what the show started, and is now continuing.

Chyler Leigh's Coming Out

Chyler Leigh's coming out turned out to be deeply personal for her. The actor professed it on social media before committing to LGBTQ completely. She stated how acceptance is difficult. She also went on to say how this new development has led to social isolation as well.

She wrote, 'When I was told that my character was to come out in season 2, a flurry of thoughts and emotions flew through and around me. What I didn't realize was how the scene where she finally confessed her truth would leap off the pages of the script and genuinely become a variation of my own. IRL.'

She further explains, 'My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest each take we filmed, every time presenting another opportunity to get those honest words out of my mouth. Though they don't exactly match my personal dialogue, the heart behind it surely did.'

And to steal from Alex's words, that's because there's some truth to what she said about me. It's been a long and lonely road for both my husband and myself but I can whole-heartedly say that after all these years, he and I are still discovering the depths of ourselves and each other, but throughout our journey we've learned to be proud of who we are, no matter the cost.

Though it wasn't easy for her and her family, 'Here's the kicker though. Since that episode aired, I was told from dear friends (and even avid watchers of Supergirl) that they would no longer watch the show because of the fact that Alex's journey took a turn from their less than acceptable beliefs. Soon after, they began to distance themselves and eventually my family and I was outcast, marking the loss of many folks we loved.'

Chyler Leigh's coming out is not yet defined. Yet, it is a defining moment. Humans are dynamic, how can our feelings and sexuality be static?

At the moment, Chyler is married to Nathan West, and the couple has 3 kids together.
