Momo making your health risky

New Delhi: Momos have become a favorite snack across cities and towns, loved for their soft, steaming texture and flavorful fillings.

Whether steamed or fried they are hard to resist, often leaving people reaching for more than one. But despite their popularity and the vegetables or meat inside, health experts warn that regular consumption of momos can be harmful. Made with refined flour and additives, these snacks may contribute to weight gain, blood sugar spikes, and other serious health problems.

Though momos often include vegetables and meat, the dough is usually made from refined flour, also called maida. Some manufacturers add chemicals like Azodicarbonamide, Chlorine gas, and Benzoyl Peroxide to improve texture and shelf life. These additives can affect your health over the period, contributing to weight gain, blood sugar spikes, and even pancreatic issues.

1. Digestive Issues

The refined flour in momo wrappers can upset your stomach if eaten often. People may experience constipation, acidity, and bloating from regular consumption.

2. Risk from Vegetables

Vegetarian momos often include cabbage. If not cooked properly, cabbage can contain tapeworm spores, which are dangerous and in extreme cases it can affect the brain.

3. Heart Problems

Momos, especially fried varieties are high in sodium and chemicals that can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

4. Obesity

Fried momos and those served with mayonnaise are trending but they are loaded with unhealthy fats and oils leading to weight gain and higher risk of type-2 diabetes.

5. Allergies

Many momos contain additives and MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) which can trigger allergic reactions like skin rashes, stomach issues and even severe complications for people sensitive to gluten.

6. Cancer Risk

Studies have suggested that MSG and other preservatives commonly found in momos could be carcinogenic, increasing long-term cancer risks.

7. Piles and Digestive Irritation

The spicy red chutney that usually accompanies momos, made from tomatoes, garlic, and red chilies, can aggravate piles and cause bleeding hemorrhoids in frequent consumers.

While momos are undeniably delicious, health experts recommend moderation. Frequent consumption of fried or heavily seasoned momos can lead to serious health issues. Always prioritize hygiene, proper cooking, and balanced eating.
