Constitutional Amendment Bill Falls in Lok Sabha, Says Speaker Om Birla
New Delhi: The Constitutional Amendment Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha after not securing the required two-thirds majority.
Speaker Om Birla stated that even at the stage of consideration, the bill could not be carried forward due to insufficient support.
According to the Speaker, 298 members voted in favour of the bill, while 230 voted against it. Despite having more votes on the "ayes" side, the bill failed to meet the two-thirds majority required for constitutional amendments.
Om Birla clarified that since the bill did not achieve the special majority, no further action could be taken on it. Effectively, the bill has fallen at the very stage of being taken up for consideration in the House.
Following this development, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that the government would not proceed with the other two related bills, including those linked to women's reservation and delimitation.
This marks a major legislative setback for the government, as key reform bills could not move forward. The opposition is likely to view this as a significant victory, while the government may need to reassess its strategy.
