Dibrugarh: ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (ICAR-NRC on Yak), Dirang, successfully conducted a yak reintroduction programme at Mechuka Block of Shi-Yomi district, Arunachal Pradesh, on Friday.
The programme was organised under the chairmanship of Dr Mihir Sarkar, Director, with the objective of promoting livestock-based livelihoods, enhancing eco-tourism opportunities, and conserving the traditional cultural heritage associated with yak rearing in the region.
The programme was implemented in collaboration with the Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers Federation (JMMFF) and the Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.
The initiative emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts for the promotion and expansion of scientific yak husbandry to support tribal communities in high-altitude areas.
The event was coordinated by Dr Vijay Paul, Principal Scientist, along with Tadang Tamut, Chairman, JMMFF, and Dr Jumter Tali, Veterinary Officer, Animal Husbandry Department, Mechuka.
As part of the programme, six yaks (four females and two males) were distributed to selected tribal farmers to support livelihood enhancement.
In addition, 45 farmers benefited through awareness programmes on scientific yak rearing and received input support under the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) activity of the Institute.
The initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable livestock development and community empowerment in the remote high-altitude regions of Arunachal Pradesh.
