Dibrugarh: The flood situation in Assam remains grim, with five more people losing their lives in the last 24 hours, taking the state's flood death toll to 94.
Of the five deaths reported during the period, two each were from Sivasagar and Biswanath districts, while one was reported from Golaghat district.
According to the latest DRIMS report, floods continue to affect 14 districts, impacting 1,60,653 people across 563 villages under 38 revenue circles. The Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh is the only river flowing above the danger level.
Relief and rescue operations are continuing in the affected areas, with 104 relief camps and relief distribution centres currently operational. The report also recorded one person missing in the Kalaigaon Revenue Circle of Udalguri district.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday jointly reviewed the flood situation with Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda at a meeting held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Dibrugarh.
The meeting paid special attention to the devastating floods in the Upper Assam districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat.
It also undertook a detailed review of the impact of the floods during the current monsoon season, the relief assistance provided to affected people, and the measures being taken for their rehabilitation.
"Reviewed the flood situation in Dibrugarh, Assam, today along with CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Ji and state administrative officers after my visit to the flood-affected areas. We conducted a comprehensive review of the ongoing relief, rehabilitation and healthcare measures to ensure that timely assistance reaches every affected family," Nadda said in a social media post.
He added, "Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, the Central Government is working closely with the Government of Assam to ensure comprehensive support for relief, rehabilitation and the timely restoration of normalcy in the flood-affected areas."
During the meeting, Sarma said the recent floods in Upper Assam had caused extensive loss of lives and property.
He requested Nadda to facilitate the relaxation of the norms under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) so that a larger number of affected people could benefit from disaster assistance.
The chief minister said officials would be trained on August 7 and 8 to conduct surveys assessing the permanent damage caused by the recent floods in the four worst-hit districts. The survey will begin on August 9.
