Imphal: A delegation of the Liangmai Naga Council and the Liangmai Naga Women Union on Wednesday met Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and demanded the immediate release of six missing men, including a pastor, who were allegedly abducted by unidentified armed men from Kangpokpi district on May 13.
During the meeting, representatives of the Liangmai community urged the chief minister to ensure the safe return of the six men from Konsakhul village. They also stated that if the missing men were found dead, their bodies should be handed over to their families to enable them to perform the last rites.
The delegation further demanded deployment of state police personnel in vulnerable Liangmai villages in Kangpokpi district to ensure the safety of residents amid the ongoing tensions.
Responding to the delegation, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh informed them that Manipur Police and CRPF personnel were conducting combing operations in suspected areas to trace the missing men.
Appealing for calm, the chief minister said the state government was making all possible efforts to ease tensions and restore peace in the affected areas. He also appealed to all communities to refrain from violence and cooperate with the government in bringing back normalcy.
The memorandum submitted to the chief minister was jointly signed by the Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, Liangmai Pui Naga Ruangdi, Manipur and Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangdi, Manipur, highlighting the concerns and grievances of the Liangmai community over the incident.
