Imphal: In a display of solidarity, hundreds of Naga and Meitei women staged a joint sit-in protest at Khwairamband Ima Keithel in Manipur's Imphal on Tuesday, demanding justice for the killing of six Naga civilians.
The protest was organised by the Naga People's Union Imphal, Imphal Naga Business Association, Foothill Naga Coordination Committee (FNCC), Khwairamband Nupi Keithel, Ima Gi Meira, the United Zeliangrongpui Coordination Committee (UZCC) and the Committee on Coordinated Response and Rehabilitation (CCRR). Besides Naga and Meitei groups, members of the Meitei Pangal community and other residents also participated in the demonstration.
The protesters demanded that the government convene a special or Monsoon Session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to hold a detailed discussion on the prevailing situation and measures to restore peace. They also called for the immediate abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements with Kuki armed groups, the release of Naga and Meitei volunteers arrested in connection with the conflict, and action against those responsible for killings and other incidents of violence.

Speaking to reporters, FNCC president Akhiu Ngaomei said justice must be ensured in all unresolved cases for peace to return to the state. He referred to the killings at Tupul and TM Kasom, the disappearance of more than 30 Meitei persons, and the arrest of village volunteers.
"Including those killed at TM Kasom and Tupul, there are more than 30 missing Meiteis. Till now, they are still missing. Not only that, those who came forward as volunteers to safeguard the motherland, the so-called village guards or village volunteers, have been arrested by the police. We are demanding justice for them," Ngaomei said.
Meanwhile, Ima Gi Meira convenor Thokchom Sujata Devi alleged that Kuki armed groups had targeted indigenous Meitei and Naga communities during the conflict and accused successive governments of failing to ensure justice for the victims.
"No government, be it the previous one or the one in power now, has been able to bring a permanent solution. That is why we have had to stage this protest. Despite one of the Kuki organisations admitting involvement in the killing of the six Naga civilians, the government has failed to take any action," she said.
Naga activist Ashang Kasar also criticised the government's handling of the case, alleging that the bodies of the six civilians have remained at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary for nearly 40 days while their families continue to await justice.
"We are shocked that the government has still not taken any action or booked those responsible. What is the reason behind this?" Kasar asked.
He added that many people in the state were dissatisfied with the government's response, alleging that it had failed to deliver justice to the victims' families.
The protesters also demanded that the government declare the Kuki National Front-P (KNF-P) a terrorist organisation. They further called for the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, alleging links between her husband and the KNF-P.
