The decision was taken unanimously by the Joint Executive Committee of the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association at an emergent meeting held on Monday.

According to the resolution, the two associations had earlier, at a joint general body meeting of all Bar Associations in the state on August 24, unanimously resolved to pursue the demand for Kumar's removal as Advocate General.

The associations said the decision to abstain from work was taken as the state government had so far not shown any interest in communicating with the associations or addressing their demand.

The Bar associations maintained that their demand had arisen following what they described as the actions and conduct of the Advocate General that had affected the "dignity, welfare and interest of the Bar".

Under the resolution adopted on August 31, all advocates practising before courts and tribunals across Meghalaya will abstain from judicial work with effect from September 1.

The abstention will continue until the state government removes Kumar from the office of Advocate General, the resolution stated.

However, the Bar associations clarified that the abstention will not apply to bail matters.

The resolution further directed that it be widely circulated among members of all Bar Associations in Meghalaya to ensure participation in the abstention.

The decision marks an escalation in the legal fraternity's ongoing demand for the removal of the Advocate General.
