Shillong: Interstate movement of tourist and commercial vehicles between Meghalaya and Assam will continue without obstruction until September 10, 2026, following a meeting between the Meghalaya government and representatives of tourist taxi associations on Sunday.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, accompanied by senior government officials, met representatives of tourist taxi associations to address disruptions affecting vehicle movement between the two states.
As an immediate measure, it was agreed that tourist and commercial vehicles from both Meghalaya and Assam would be allowed to operate normally across state borders. Meghalaya tourist taxis can continue to enter and operate in Assam, while Assam-registered vehicles will similarly be permitted to operate in Meghalaya.
The meeting also stressed the need for peaceful movement, with both sides agreeing to ensure there is no obstruction, intimidation, violence or other untoward incidents.
The arrangement will remain in force until September 10, when Dhar is expected to meet his Assam counterparts to discuss the issue and work towards a permanent resolution.
The agreement comes after several days of tension and disruption in interstate vehicle movement, affecting tourists, passengers and commercial operators travelling between Shillong and Guwahati.
With the immediate understanding in place, authorities and transport operators are expected to ensure a return to normalcy and uninterrupted movement between the two states ahead of the next round of talks.
