Union Minister raises border, tourism issues in Mizoram talks

EastMojo 1 month ago

Aizawl: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar arrived in Aizawl on a two-day visit and held a series of high-level meetings with Mizoram government officials, focusing on border security, cross-border threats, and key development challenges, including restrictions affecting tourism.

During the meeting at the MINECO Secretariat, officials from various departments presented updates on centrally sponsored schemes, achievements, and ongoing challenges. Among the issues raised was the need to address difficulties faced by foreign tourists due to the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and Protected Area Permit (PAP) requirements, which continue to impact tourism in the state.

Security agencies, including the Assam Rifles and Border Security Force, briefed the Minister on border management along Mizoram's international boundaries with Myanmar and Bangladesh, including fencing, illegal cross-border movement, and the need for stronger surveillance. The Minister emphasised better coordination between Assam Rifles, state police, district administration, and local bodies to ensure both security and welfare of border residents.

He also urged officials to prepare detailed reports outlining departmental challenges and requirements, assuring that follow-up action would be taken.

As part of his engagements, the Minister later interacted with officials from Siaha district via video conference after his planned visit was cancelled due to inclement weather. During the interaction, district officials highlighted the overall peaceful law and order situation while noting continued vigilance against illegal cross-border activities such as drug trafficking and arms movement.

The Minister also visited the Mizoram Police Headquarters, where he met with state officials and security personnel.

The visit included discussions on a wide range of issues, including international trade, education, healthcare, and long-term development planning under the Vision 2047 framework.
