Panic has gripped the Baichigram area of Hooghly district following a violent attack on a religious gathering on the night of March 22, 2026. While devotees were immersed in Harinam Sankirtan, a mob armed with sticks and blunt weapons allegedly stormed the temple premises and launched a brutal assault on the kirtan artists and local residents.
According to witnesses, the attackers, reportedly identifying with radical extremist groups, disrupted the peaceful chants with violence. Several people, including artists and elderly devotees, were critically injured and have been rushed to Chandannagar Hospital. Visuals of blood-soaked devotees have gone viral on social media, fueling public outrage. Local youths managed to apprehend one of the suspects, who is reportedly from Murshidabad, and handed him over to the police.
Local BJP leaders have reached the spot, condemning the incident as a “planned communal attack” aimed at inciting violence during the election season. While the police have deployed additional forces to maintain order, the atmosphere in Baichigram remains volatile. District authorities have assured a thorough investigation, warning that any attempt to disturb communal harmony will be met with strict legal action.
