China: The HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) is spreading rapidly in China. Several states have declared an emergency due to the rising outbreak of this virus.
Experts suggest that this virus could be more dangerous than COVID-19. The situation in several regions of China has become dire, with citizens beginning to wear masks again. Thousands of people are falling victim to this virus, especially the elderly and children, who are experiencing severe symptoms.
Hospitals are witnessing a rapid surge in patient numbers, particularly in pediatric wards, which are overwhelmed. Long queues have formed outside hospitals.
Northern China has seen a significant spread of the HMPV virus. Airports are also becoming crowded, and the virus is spreading rapidly across several states. Virology expert Dr. Lin Jiazhu has stated that HMPV was previously mild but is now causing serious cases. The decline in people's immunity and the virus's mutation have made the situation worse.
This virus is also spreading from China to other countries. In England, flu cases have risen sharply, with hospital admissions quadrupling.
The WHO is monitoring the virus's mutations and has advised the use of masks. While a global health emergency has not yet been declared, the situation in China raises concerns about the potential spread to neighboring countries.
HMPV was first identified in the Netherlands in 2001. It belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and spreads more during winter. It is transmitted through coughing or sneezing.
The HMPV virus has so far been detected in China, the Netherlands, the UK, Finland, Australia, Canada, and the USA.
