High drama unfolded in the heart of Kolkata as hundreds of Para Teachers staged a surprise protest right in front of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's dharna site at Dharamtala.
Demanding immediate permanent status and a salary hike, the protestors clashed with the police, leading to a chaotic situation that brought traffic to a standstill. An visibly agitated Chief Minister didn’t hold back, launching a scathing attack on the protestors and the Central Government.
The Clashes and Chaos: The protest caught the police off-guard as teachers from various districts converged at the spot with banners. When security personnel tried to push them back, a scuffle ensued, leading to several arrests. The teachers claimed they have been pushed to the wall due to years of financial neglect, while the state administration viewed the move as a pre-planned disruption of the CM’s ongoing program.
Mamata's Direct Attack: Taking to the microphone, Mamata Banerjee accused the agitators of being “BJP stooges.” She questioned their loyalty, stating, “Why are you shouting slogans here? If you have the guts, go to Delhi and protest against PM Modi and Amit Shah. They are the ones who have blocked the funds for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).” She further warned that she would not tolerate “drama” intended to malign the state’s image under the instructions of Delhi.
Political Fallout: The Chief Minister emphasized that despite the financial crunch caused by the Centre’s alleged withholding of funds, the state has consistently increased the honorarium for para teachers. The protest has now escalated into a fresh political battle, with the TMC claiming it was a BJP-sponsored stunt and the opposition accusing the state of using police force to suppress the voice of educators.
