In a sharp critique of the Union Government, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi alleged on Monday that the core objective of the upcoming Women's Reservation Bill is not reservation, but the “delimitation” of women.
Expressing her concerns in an opinion column, she described the government’s proposal for the redrawing of constituency boundaries as “extremely dangerous” and a “direct blow to the Constitution.”
Sonia Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using this bill as a tactical move to further delay and mislead the caste-based census. While the government aims to implement the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections based on the 2011 census, Gandhi argued that any shift in political representation must ensure fairness rather than just mathematical calculations. She warned that unofficial plans regarding delimitation could drastically alter India’s political landscape and weaken long-standing constitutional principles.
