For 85-year-old Shanti Devi, the steep stairs of railway overbridges were once an insurmountable barrier. Similarly, for Rajesh, a specially-abled commuter, reaching the platform meant total dependency on others.

Today, this struggle has been replaced by dignity and ease. Eastern Railway's aggressive infrastructure push has made “staircase phobia” a thing of the past.

Committed to seamless travel, Eastern Railway has already operationalized 93 lifts and 77 escalators across its zones.

  • Asansol: 23 Lifts, 9 Escalators
  • Howrah: 19 Lifts, 26 Escalators
  • Malda: 37 Lifts, 16 Escalators
  • Sealdah: 14 Lifts, 26 Escalators

The mission continues into the 2026-27 financial year with plans to install 14 additional lifts and 4 new escalators specifically targeting high-traffic areas. CPRO Shivaramm Meena stated that the goal is to transform the station experience from physical exertion to absolute comfort. Whether it’s senior citizens or passengers with heavy luggage, Eastern Railway ensures that physical limitations never hinder the joy of travel.
