Once the firebrand face of the CPI(M) in West Bengal, Gautam Deb is now a far cry from the bustling election rallies he once dominated.
Known for his sharp attacks and headline-grabbing prophecies, the veteran leader now spends his days away from the field but keeps a hawk-like eye on every political development. As the 2026 assembly elections approach, Deb shares his insights on the changing landscape of Bengal’s democracy.
On the Election Commission and Party Ideology: Deb noted that the Election Commission has never been as central to the political discourse as it is today. “Every party-from the TMC to the BJP-has taken a different stance on the EC, making it the primary agenda,” he remarked. Addressing the CPI(M)'s electoral dry spell, he admitted the party is undergoing deep introspection. He emphasized, “Our party was built for revolution, not just for elections. For bourgeois parties, elections are everything; for us, they are merely a platform.”
The 2026 Prediction: True to his style of making bold predictions, Deb stated that a victory for Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming polls would signify a defeat for the populace. “If she wins this time, the headline won’t be her victory; the headline will be that the people of West Bengal have lost. They failed to bring change,” he asserted. Surrounded by memorabilia of a bygone era in his room, Gautam Deb continues to dream of a new dawn for the Left, even as he acknowledges the harsh reality of their current political vacuum.
