India has taken a significant step to boost domestic manufacturing of high-value electronics components. The government has approved a total of 17 projects, valued at ₹7,172 crore, under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS).
This approval is considered crucial in strengthening India’s position within the global electronics supply chain.
What is the Government’s Plan?
These 17 projects, sanctioned in the second tranche of ECMS, are expected to generate a total production worth ₹65,111 crore. This brings the total number of approved projects under ECMS to 24. These projects will be established across 9 states and involve high-value components such as Camera Modules, Connectors, Multi-layer PCBs, Oscillators, and Enclosures.
The companies set to benefit under ECMS include major and emerging players like Jabil Circuit India, Aequs Consumer Products, Uno Minda, ASUX Safety Components India, Zetfab India, TE Connectivity India, and Meena Electrotech.
India to Become a Global Electronics Hub
According to a PTI report, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the approval of these projects demonstrates India’s rapid emergence in the field of electronics manufacturing. He emphasized that India must strongly focus on three key areas going forward: Global standard design, Six Sigma Quality, and promoting an indigenous supplier network. He clearly stated that the quality system will now be a core part of the evaluation for every project.
Strengthening Supply Chain Control
Vaishnaw explained that in the evolving geo-political and geo-economic environment, strong control over the supply chain will become India’s real strength in global competition. Schemes like ECMS will solidify India’s command over the supply chain. He warned, “Challenges will increase, and in such times, your control over the supply chain will determine your competitive ability.” He also added that the government is soon going to release a new skilling framework for electronics manufacturing.
The government anticipates that this tranche will reduce import dependence on high-value components, boost domestic manufacturing, and increase job creation in the electronics sector. The investment through ECMS clarifies India’s goal: to achieve self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta) across the entire electronics value chain, from design to production.
