In a massive pre-election update, the Election Commission has removed approximately 91 lakh names from the electoral rolls of West Bengal.

The list of deleted names was officially released late Monday night following a rigorous scrutiny of over 60 lakh voters who were previously kept under the 'Adjudication' category.

The impact is most severe in Murshidabad district, which saw the highest number of deletions at 4,55,137. In contrast, Jhargram recorded the fewest removals. The state capital, Kolkata, has also witnessed a significant purge. In South Kolkata, 28,468 names were struck off, while North Kolkata saw 39,164 deletions. Key constituencies like Bhabanipur, Kasba, Ballygunge, Jorasanko, and Manicktala are among the areas heavily affected by this revision.

As per the Commission, data for 59,84,512 individuals has been made public so far. Another 22,163 cases have been resolved but are awaiting electronic signatures (e-signatures). Once this final step is completed, the number of deleted voters could rise further. With the elections around the corner, this large-scale exclusion has sparked intense debate regarding voter rights and the accuracy of the updated electoral rolls.
