London: Another feather in the cap of Bengali culture along the banks of the Thames. Mother Durga is set to find a permanent abode in Britain this March.
However, this journey was not easy. After participating in the Thames Durga Parade, the idol initially remained neglected in a corner. Later, thanks to the efforts of the Peterborough Bengali Cultural Club, it found its desired destination. Club member Anamika Ghosh shared, "I attended the Heritage Bengal Global (HBG) Awards ceremony. There, HBG Director Anirban Mukhopadhyay mentioned that this unique artwork was lying in a garage after the Thames Parade. Hearing this, I felt compelled to find a proper place for Mother Durga so that everyone could visit her." Initially, she approached several organizations but returned empty-handed. However, she did not give up. Anamika explained, "This idol of Mother Durga is not just a religious symbol but also a representation of women's empowerment. I presented it in that light, and eventually, success came. The installation of this idol is not just a historic moment for Peterborough but for the entire UK. It is a matter of immense pride for Bengalis." She hopes that the artwork will attract not only Bengalis but people from all corners of the country, spreading awareness about the significance of Durga Puja and the cultural heritage behind it.
