The political temperature in West Bengal has reached a boiling point following a threat by Pakistan's Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, to attack Kolkata.
Seizing the opportunity, TMC Mahila Congress State Vice-President Moumita Basu Chakraborty took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a satirical meme. The post depicts a fictional conversation between PM Modi and Donald Trump, suggesting that the BJP uses the “Pakistan threat” as a scripted tool to win elections.
The meme has sparked a massive backlash on social media, with many users slamming the TMC leader for trivializing national security. However, the top brass of the Trinamool Congress has doubled down on the attack. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the silence of the PM and the Defence Minister, stating, “Pakistan is threatening to blow up Kolkata. Why is the central leadership quiet? We always stand by the nation, but we won’t tolerate threats to our city.”
Adding fuel to the fire, Abhishek Banerjee challenged the Union Government during a rally in Cooch Behar. He asserted that instead of focusing on removing TMC from power, the government should empower the BSF and the Indian Army to take control of Lahore. As the Assembly elections approach, the war of words over Pakistan has become the latest flashpoint in Bengal politics.
