After enduring a punishing heatwave with temperatures hitting season highs, South Bengal is set for a major weather turnaround. The Alipore Meteorological Department has issued a high alert for the next five days, predicting widespread rainfall and squally winds across the region.

According to weather scientists, a cyclonic circulation near Bengal and moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal will trigger “intense thunderstorms” between Tuesday and Thursday. Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and the Medinipur districts are likely to witness gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph, along with frequent lightning strikes. While the mercury is expected to drop by several degrees, providing much-needed respite, the Met office has warned of potential disruptions to daily life. Residents are advised to take shelter in safe structures during the storms and avoid open fields to mitigate the risk of lightning-related accidents. North Bengal districts are also under a heavy rain watch during this period.
