At the southern tip of Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu lies Dhanushkodi, a place often referred to as ‘The Last Corner of India’.
It is here that the road literally ends, plunging into the vast, deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. This thin strip of land is a hauntingly beautiful reminder of nature's raw power and divine mystery.
A Town Lost in Time: Before 1964, Dhanushkodi was a bustling port city. However, a catastrophic cyclone on the night of December 22, 1964, wiped the entire town off the map in a matter of hours. A passenger train was washed away by the tidal waves, taking hundreds of lives. Following the tragedy, the government declared it a ‘Ghost Town’, unfit for human habitation.
The Road to the Horizon: In recent years, a scenic highway has been constructed that leads travelers to the very tip of the island. Driving on this road is a surreal experience-with the ocean crashing on both sides and only the horizon in sight. This point, known as ‘Arichal Munai’, is also believed to be the starting point of ‘Ram Setu’ (Adam’s Bridge).
Dhanushkodi remains a must-visit for those who seek to witness the confluence of history, mythology, and breathtaking natural beauty. It is the only place in India where you can truly feel like you are standing at the edge of the world.
