Who was Eli Cohen? The man who helped Israel single-handedly win the Arab War, and why does Israel want his remains 60 years later?

Who was Eli Cohen? The man who helped Israel single-handedly win the Arab War, and why does Israel want his remains 60 years later?

Israel's intelligence agency Mossad is regarded as one of the most lethal spy organizations in the world. Its agents are skilled at gathering intelligence.

One of Mossad's star spies was Eli Cohen.

Eli Cohen performed acts for Israel that made him a national hero. In 1965, he was executed, but before his death, he provided Israel with critical information that enabled it to win the Arab War of 1967 in just six days.

Cohen infiltrated Syria in 1962 under the guise of businessman Kamel Amin Thabet. Within three years, he became close to Syria's top leaders. He achieved such a position in the Syrian government that his words were treated as directives. Cohen was publicly hanged in Syria 59 years ago. Now, decades later, Israel is intensifying its demand to retrieve his remains from Syria.

Israeli officials have been striving to recover Cohen's body from Syria. As one of Israel's most renowned spies, Cohen had gained the trust of Syrian political and military elites. He provided vital intelligence that secured Israel's victory in the Six-Day War of 1967. However, his cover was blown, and he was executed. For the past 60 years, Israel has been trying to bring his remains home. The location of Cohen's burial site remains unknown, as Syrian authorities have repeatedly relocated it to conceal the remains.

Despite years of effort and numerous appeals to the Syrian government, Israel has been unsuccessful in recovering Cohen's body. Syria has admitted to misleading Israel by frequently moving Cohen's remains to different locations.

Eli Cohen was born in 1924 in Alexandria, Egypt, into a Jewish family. After Israel's establishment in 1948, his family migrated to Israel. Cohen himself settled in Israel in 1957. After years of effort and patriotism, Cohen joined Israel's intelligence agency Mossad. Following a stint in Israel's military intelligence division, he was recruited by Mossad in the early 1960s. He was fluent in Arabic, Spanish, and French.
