Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India after a gap of four years. His packed two-day schedule, which began on Thursday, concluded with his departure late Friday night.

This visit, marked by continuous discussions, meetings, and crucial commercial agreements, has given a new dimension to India-Russia diplomatic relations.

Modi Breaks Protocol to Welcome Putin

Thursday was largely dedicated to personal conversations. Prime Minister Modi broke ‘protocol’ by personally going to the airport to receive Russian President Vladimir Putin. From there, the two heads of state travelled together in one car to Lok Kalyan Marg and attended a dinner. Though no formal bilateral meeting took place during this phase, it is believed that important discussions were held at a personal level.

On Friday morning, Putin first visited Rajghat, followed by a courtesy call on the President. He then held a meeting with Prime Minister Modi. Modi shared the essence of this meeting on his social media. He wrote, “I have discussed various international issues with the Russian President. I have conveyed the message of establishing peace regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Additionally, I have emphasized the necessity of jointly fighting terrorism.”

New Indian Embassies in Russia and Key Agreements

During the joint press briefing on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the inauguration of two new Indian embassies in Russia. He said, “The important aspect of the India-Russia relationship is the culture and people of both countries.” To further strengthen this bond, New Delhi has opened two Indian embassies in Kazan and Yekaterinburg in Russia.

Towards the end of the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. An Economic Coordination Agreement valid until 2030 was also sealed at this summit.

Russia’s Cooperation in Koodankulam

Russia has extended its cooperation at India’s largest nuclear power plant, Koodankulam (Tamil Nadu). Putin himself confirmed that Russia intends to take charge of the four reactors currently under construction out of the six planned for the plant. The Russian President stated, “We will provide full capacity to the respective power plant.”
