Ton: Not weight, actually cooling capacity

A common misconception: "ton" doesn't represent the physical weight of the AC. While going to buy an AC, when the salesperson mentions a "1-ton" or "1.5 ton" AC, s/he is talking about its ability to cool a space. Ton or tonnage refers to the unit used to measure the cooling capacity of the air conditioner based on the size and other features of a room. This capacity is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour, commonly denoted as BTU/hr.

This means that the higher the BTU rating, the more powerful the AC.

Why ton/tonnage in AC matters: Finding the right fit

BTU is a standard measuring unit and for every square foot of the room, one will need 20 BTU/hr. Imagine BTUs as tiny heat warriors. You need enough warriors for your room size. So, the bigger the room, the more BTUs (and potentially tons) one will need.

This is the foundation. A 1-ton AC won't suffice for a large living room and a 1.5-ton might be overkill for a bedroom. A 1 ton AC is ideal for a room having 200 sq. ft area while 1.5 ton AC is fit for a room size ranging from 200 to 250 sq. ft. Also, 1 ton AC is ideal for Bedrooms, studio apartments, and smaller offices while 1.5 ton C is fit for master bedrooms, medium-sized offices, large living rooms, and bigger dining halls. 1 ton AC is very efficient for compact cribs while the other one is ideal for spaces that require more cooling.

The budget can be a deciding factor that can influence your decision while buying an AC. 1 ton split ACs costs around Rs 35,000 and most window ACs are available Rs 30,000 while 1.5 ton ACs are costly in comparison and a split ACs can reach Rs 50,000 while window ACs are prices start from Rs 30,000.

Noise

A 1 ton AC is mostly quiet, around 25 dB for split ACs and 1.5 ton ACs produce more noise in comparison to a 1-ton around 35dB.
