Google Search went down on Tuesday, May 12, leaving thousands of users across India and beyond facing error messages, blank pages, and search results that simply refused to load.
The message that greeted people trying to search anything was blunt and unhelpful in equal measure: "We're sorry, but it appears that there has been an internal server error while processing your request. Our engineers have been notified and are working to resolve the issue."
Which is fine as far as it goes except it told users nothing about when things would be fixed or how widespread the problem actually was.
Downdetector showed error sharply at 10
According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, complaints surged sharply around 10:29 AM IST, with reports crossing 3,700 at the peak of the disruption. Most complaints pointed directly at Google Search itself, while a chunk of users also reported trouble loading pages and accessing the website generally.
Breaking down what people were experiencing, the majority of complaints around 58 per cent were tied to Search failures, with users unable to run queries or get results. About 25 per cent reported content failing to load, and 12 per cent had broader website access problems including login and navigation errors.
The peculiar part was the official silence. Google's own Search status page showed "no incidents" even as Downdetector confirmed a significant spike in reports and users flooded social media with screenshots of the error. That gap between what the dashboard said and what people were actually experiencing didn't go unnoticed.
Other Google services Gmail, YouTube, Maps appeared largely unaffected in most regions, suggesting the problem was isolated to Search specifically rather than a broader infrastructure failure.
For most users, the outage was over relatively quickly. In at least some cases the error lasted only a matter of minutes before things started working again.
By midday, the bulk of reports had settled down, though some users were still seeing intermittent issues, still, even a short disruption involving Google Search has a way of making people realise how dependent daily life has become on a single search box.
Students mid-assignment, workers looking something up, journalists on deadline all of them hitting the same wall at the same time.
This is not the first time Google has suffered outages, there have been several such instances before, and each time, the reaction is the same mix of frustration, dark humour on social media, and a quiet reminder that even the most reliable tools have bad days.
Google has not issued a detailed statement explaining what caused the problem.
