Meet Porter founders Uttam Digga and Pranav Goel: IIT Kharagpur alumni behind Rs 4,306 crore revenue unicorn

Porter Success Story: India's startup ecosystem has produced its fair share of headline-grabbing unicorns, but few stories feel as quietly transformative as that of Porter.

Built to solve a problem most urban businesses deal with daily, moving goods across crowded cities, Porter has grown into a logistics backbone for millions.Behind this rise are two IIT Kharagpur alumni who chose to leave comfortable corporate careers and take a bet on inefficiency: Uttam Digga and Pranav Goel.

Today, their company isn't just another startup success, it's a profitable, tech-enabled transporter serving millions, with a valuation crossing $1 billion.

Porter Success Story: IIT Kharagpur roots and early career

Both Pranav Goel and Uttam Digga studied at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur between 2007 and 2012, where they built the analytical and problem-solving foundation that would later shape Porter. Goel pursued engineering, while Digga completed an integrated M.Sc. in Economics, an interesting combination that later translated into both technical execution and business understanding.

Before entrepreneurship, both founders worked in the financial sector, as analysts at J.P. Morgan. Uttam gained experience in financial risk and operations through roles at institutions like HSBC and IFMR Trust, where as Pranav gained early experience in analytics and operations through his stint at Cognizant Technology Solutions. Despite stable careers, they saw a much larger opportunity, one that most overlooked.

The idea behind Porter

In 2014, along with co-founder Vikas Choudhary, the trio launched Porter in Mumbai. The idea was simple but powerful: bring structure to India's fragmented intra-city logistics system. At the time, small businesses struggled to find reliable transport, while drivers faced idle time and inconsistent earnings. Porter attempted to bridge that gap using a tech-enabled model. The result was a service that connects MSME customers directly with driver-partners for on-demand logistics, packers and movers, and enterprise goods transport.

Porter's valuation, revenue and profitability

Porter's growth story has been both rapid and disciplined. By 2025, the company had entered the unicorn club with a valuation between $1.1 billion and $1.2 billion. What makes the story more compelling is that it is not just about scale, but also profitability.

FY25 Revenue: Rs 4,306 crore (As per ET)
Net Profit (FY25): Rs 55 crore
Valuation: $1.1-$1.2 billion

Unlike many startups that burn cash for growth, Porter has managed to balance expansion with financial sustainability, a rare feat in the logistics-tech space.

Scale of operations and impact

Over the years, Porter has quietly embedded itself into India's urban economy. Its scale today reflects just how deep that impact runs.

  • Serves over 30 Lakh MSME customers every month
  • Works with over 6 lakh+ driver-partners every month
  • Operates across 41+ cities Globally

Leadership roles and evolution

While both founders started together, their roles have evolved as the company scaled. Pranav Goel, who earlier served as CEO, is now the Executive Vice Chairman, focusing on long-term strategy and growth. Uttam Digga, who previously handled operations as COO, stepped into the CEO role in 2023, driving expansion and execution. Digga has often spoken about the massive untapped opportunity in intra-city logistics, estimated to be a multi-billion-dollar market. His focus remains on improving vehicle utilisation and building efficiency for SMEs and MSMEs.

Awards and recognition

Porter's impact hasn't gone unnoticed. In 2025, Pranav Goel and Uttam Digga were recognised with the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Start-up category), highlighting their role in reshaping India's logistics landscape. The recognition placed them alongside some of India's most influential business leaders, underlining how critical logistics has become to the country's economic engine.

The larger impact

Porter's journey is not just about building a successful company, it's about formalising an entire sector. By moving logistics from informal, cash-driven systems to structured, tech-enabled operations, the company has made goods movement more reliable, traceable, and scalable, while also enabling greater formalisation for MSMEs through better documentation, pricing transparency, and operational reliability.
At its core, the idea remains simple: reduce idle time for drivers and make goods transportation seamless for businesses. But in execution, this has translated into stronger demand-supply matching, improved utilisation, and more consistent access to logistics for small businesses that previously operated with limited visibility and control. As India's cities continue to expand, the need for efficient, predictable logistics will only grow, positioning Porter, and its founders, at the centre of a broader shift towards a more organised and accessible goods movement ecosystem.
