Before the cameras, before the films, before the fame - Rahul Arunoday Banerjee was a theatre person. That is where he learned his craft, and anyone who watched him closely on screen could tell.
There was always something more considered about his performances than your average film actor.
His first big break on television came through the Zee Bangla show Khela, where he played a character named Aditya. That role opened doors. Films followed.
Chirodini Tumi Je Amar Changed Everything
In 2008, director Raj Chakraborty cast Rahul opposite Priyanka Sarkar in Chirodini Tumi Je Amar. The film was a massive hit. Bengali audiences took to him immediately - warm, natural on screen, and completely convincing in the role. The film made him a recognisable face across Bengal practically overnight.
What nobody knew then was that the co-star he fell in love with on screen, he would also fall in love with off it. Rahul and Priyanka got married, and have a son named Shohoj.
The Films That Showed His Range
Rahul never stayed in one lane. After the romantic success of his debut, he took on very different kinds of work.
In Na Hannyate in 2012 he played Ratan - a quietly powerful performance in a film about human resilience that critics responded to warmly. Two years later came Byomkesh Phire Elo, the detective thriller built around Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's beloved Byomkesh Bakshi. Rahul played Sanat and fit naturally into the suspense-driven atmosphere of the film.
Then in 2016 came Zulfiqar - Srijit Mukherji's bold modern retelling of Shakespeare, where Rahul played Laltu Das Lepidus. That kind of project requires an actor willing to take risks. He took it. Rajlokhi O Srikanto in 2019 added another dimension - a period adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel that demanded a different register entirely.
Television Was Never an Afterthought
A lot of film actors treat television as a step down. Rahul never seemed to see it that way. Lalkuthi became a household serial, and his work in it was noted for its emotional intensity. Desher Maati connected with audiences across generations. He also appeared in Horogouri Pice Hotel and the web series Indubala Bhaater Hotel - showing he was equally comfortable in the newer digital format.
His last project was Bhole Baba Par Karega - the serial he was shooting for near Talsari Beach when he drowned on Sunday. He was 43.
What People Are Saying
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted her condolences, saying she could not make sense of what had happened and that Rahul was among her favourite actors.
Actor Rudranil Ghosh, speaking to ABP Ananda, said Rahul was like a brother to him. He said he was at a complete loss for words.
That reaction - the genuine shock, the inability to find the right thing to say - was visible across Bengali film and television circles throughout Sunday evening.
The Person Behind the Work
Rahul was not just an actor. He wrote - for newspapers, for magazines. He had opinions on politics and society and was not shy about sharing them, which in an industry where most people prefer to stay neutral, made him stand out.
He and Priyanka separated in 2017 but got back together in 2023. Their son Shohoj is the one who will grow up hearing stories about his father from people who genuinely meant what they said about him.
Tollywood has lost performers before. It will again. But the ones who brought something real to the work - those are the ones that leave a gap that does not fill easily.
