ETNow.in 1 week ago

Stock Market Holiday: Indian stock markets will remain closed on Thursday, May 28, on account of Bakri Eid, giving traders a shortened trading week.

Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain shut across key segments, including equity, equity derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB).

This marks the second stock market holiday in May, after trading remained suspended earlier on May 1 for Maharashtra Day.

  • Equity derivatives segment
  • Securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segment

Meanwhile, the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will follow a split trading schedule. MCX remained closed during the morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM), while trading will resume in the evening session from 5:00 PM, continuing till 11:30 PM/11:55 PM, depending on the contract.

How many stock market holidays are left in 2026?

Indian stock exchanges have 16 scheduled holidays in 2026. With eight already observed, several trading holidays remain for the rest of the year. After the Bakri Eid closure, the next stock market holiday will be on June 26 for Muharram.

However, the readers should note that four major holidays in 2026 fall on weekends and therefore will not result in additional trading closures. These include Independence Day on August 15 and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on November 8.

Despite Diwali Laxmi Pujan falling on a Sunday this year, exchanges are expected to hold the customary Muhurat Trading session on November 8. The timing for the special one-hour session will be announced closer to the date.

Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty trade volatile ahead of holiday

The BSE Sensex swung between gains and losses and was up around 150 points, while the NIFTY 50 traded above 23,950. Among key movers, HDFC Bank declined around 2 per cent, while Eternal gained over 1 per cent. With markets shut on Thursday, investors will now track global cues and commodity prices before trading resumes on Friday.
