West Asia Crisis: Talking to Iran for safe passage of remaining 13 ships, says Ministry of External Affairs

West Asia Crisis: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said India is in touch with Iranian authorities to ensure the safe passage of 13 Indian-linked ships currently operating in and around the region amid rising geopolitical tensions.

India has secured the exit of 11 Indian ships from the Strait of Hormuz following diplomatic engagement with Iran, MEA said.

The remarks came amid concerns over maritime activity in the strategically important region. Jaiswal also clarified India's stance on Iranian ships operating in international waters and docking at Indian ports.

Addressing the weekly media briefing, Randhir Jaiswal said India had seen "forward movement" following continued diplomatic engagement with Iran.

"We have seen forward movement and, as a result of diplomatic engagement and conversations with the Iranian side, 11 Indian ships have so far exited the Strait of Hormuz," said Jaiswal.

He added that 13 Indian vessels remain stationed in the Persian Gulf, with talks underway with Iranian authorities to ensure their safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and onward return to India.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world's most strategically vital maritime corridors, handling a significant portion of global oil trade.

Iranian ships

Responding to queries on Iranian vessels, Jaiswal said ships from other countries do not need permission to operate in international waters.

"If you ask me about Indian ships that are in the Strait of Hormuz or in the Persian Gulf, I can give you an answer. Now you are asking about Iranian ships," he added.

Jaiswal further clarified that matters related to Iranian ships entering Indian waters fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Shipping and other concerned technical authorities.

BRICS

On the upcoming BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting, Jaiswal said India, as the current chair of the grouping, will host several engagements this year, including the ministerial meet.

He said invitations have been sent to BRICS member nations, partner countries and others, adding that details regarding the dates and confirmations will be shared in due course.
