West Bengal Election Results 2026: As the dust settles on the West Bengal Assembly Election Results 2026 today, a new political landscape for Bengal is being drawn.
While the state remains locked in a fierce battle between the TMC and the BJP, all eyes have turned toward Murshidabad, a district that was once the seat of great power but has recently become a symbol of political and economic despair.
Historic shift in the borderland
For decades, Murshidabad was considered an unbreakable fortress for the Congress and later for TMC. However, today's results show a stunning shift. In Murshidabad seat, BJP's Gouri Sankar Ghosh has maintained a steady lead.
Murshidabad district holds a massive 27 lakh voters.
The Political Angle: Fragmentation and frustration
The greatness of Bengal was once centred in Murshidabad's silk and trade. Today, the district is better known for its migrant labourers. The BJP's strategy to tap into this sense of "lost glory" appears to be working. By promising a return to industrial relevance and targeting the perceived corruption in local administrations, the saffron party has breached the border district.
On the other hand, the TMC faces a rebellion from within. Humayun Kabir, the chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), is leading in seats including Nowda and Rejinagar. He claims the government has discriminated against the very people who put them in power.
Speaking to reporters, Humayun Kabir has said, "What can I say? What has happened is good. This was bound to happen."
"Mamata Banerjee is the CM thrice. She gave so much authority to her nephew. They cheated the people and looted their money," he added.
SIR angel in Murshidabad seat
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal has significantly affected Murshidabad, with the district emerging as a major focus of voter list deletions ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Murshidabad reported the highest number of voter deletions among all West Bengal districts. Out of approximately 11 lakh voters checked, over 4.55 lakh names were removed following a judicial adjudication process.
Historical erasure? 346 descendants of former Bengal Nawab Mir Jafar struck off rolls
In a move that sparks intense debate across the dining tables of Murshidabad, approximately 346 descendants of Mir Jafar -- the commander-in-chief of Siraj-ud-Daulah's army who became Nawab of Bengal with East India Company support after the 1757 Battle of Plassey -- are now struck off the electoral roll.
Syed Reza Ali Meerza, 82, popularly known as 'Chhote Nawab', said not only his name but also those of nine members of his family, including that of his son, a municipal councillor, have been deleted.
"When my name was put under adjudication, I appeared with all documents for the hearing. Officials assured me that my name will remain on the roll. But when the supplementary list came out, we found that my entire family and hundreds from the Nawabi clan had been wiped off," he said.
Why does Murshidabad matter?
The battle for Murshidabad is not just about winning seats; it is about the narrative of Bengal.
Migrant crisis
Thousands of youth from this district travel across India to work as masons and labourers. The party that promises to bring them back home to work wins the heart of the district.
Identity factor
While the TMC banked on the fear of the NRC/CAA, the BJP has countered with a promise of 'vikas' and a return to the Great Bengal of the past.
Third voice
The rise of independent players like Humayun Kabir shows that Murshidabad is tired of being a vote bank and wants to be a power centre.
