One of the most controversial topics from last week after the Texas race was Kyle Busch not getting penalized for wrecking John Hunter Nemecheck while Ryan Preece got punished for a similar incident with Ty Gibbs . The RFK Racing driver had appeal against the ruling.
Veteran Denny Hamlin has warned the Ford driver over his decision.
On the latest episode of the Actions Detrimental, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver revealed how the fight before the appeal body won't be fair to the veteran racer. Despite him having a legit argument in his favor, the system isn't set up in a way that would benefit the racer.
People think, 'oh they have the appeals and stuff,' and we did a podcast after ours a couple of years ago and it's not a fair fight, guys. It's not broadcasted for a reason. Like, I think he has a legit shot of getting it overturned just based off of facts and evidence.
Denny Hamlin said on his podcast. The No:11 driver has failed to overturn his punishment in the past despite having SMT data as evidence and now the sanctioning body is using them to penalize another driver. It is the consistently inconsistent decision making that the fans as well as drivers like Denny Hamlin hates about NASCAR.
But I find it interesting that they're now using SMT as a comp for evidence. When I brought it up and they said 'oh, SMT is a very non-scientific way of looking at things (and) we don't put a lot of faith in that' and you can't rebut anything when they start giving their side to this independent panel.
Denny Hamlin added via Actions Detrimental. The veteran driver also highlighted how the teams and drivers can't object to claim made from NASCAR ahead the supposed 'independent body' and how that makes it an unfair fight. He also highlighted again how the sanctioning body has suddenly changed their stance on the SMT data usage.
There is no 'I object, that's not true.' You can't say that. You have to sit there and let them say whatever they want to say. The process is not a fair fight for the ones appealing… I heard them in their explanation say, well, you know, after he got the damage, he was having to turn left to go straight according to the SMT. It was SMT, so now SMT is a reliable source. They've changed their mind.
One key reason for Ryan Preece getting punished was his comments before the wreck on radio where he 'supposedly' threatened payback on Ty Gibbs. Hamlin highlighted that it's not right to take these comments on face value as driver say a lot of things in the heat of the moment that they don't actually mean.
We say that shit all the time, we say 'when I get back to him, he's going to get it. We say that all the time, right? I mean, I don't say it often but drivers say it all the time. When Preece said 'I'm done with him, what does that even mean?
Denny Hamlin said. The comments from the three times Daytona 500 driver are on point and shows how the sports need to fix the appeal system that seems unfair for the teams. It would be interesting to see if NASCAR will listen to the veteran and what will happen to Preece during the appeal hearing.
