The 2024 and 2025 motorsport season witnessed Hendrick Motorsports' Kyle Larson attempting the iconic Indy 500-Coke 600 double. He failed to produce a statement performance in both attempts with bad luck running his momentum.
But many stock racing fans still believes the veteran will make another attempt in search for redemption.
The two times Cup Series champion though has a clear plan; he will not be attempting the double ever again as a full-time driver in NASCAR. But that doesn't mean he is giving up on his Indy dreams as the Chevy driver is open to exploring the open wheel scene post-retirement. He might be looking to go the Jimmie Johnson route.
I think my days of attempting to double are over, but you never say never about trying at least the Indy 500 again. But I don't know. We'll see. It's tough to say. That won't come until after my full-time NASCAR career is over, and I don't know when that will be.
Kyle Larson told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. But it won't be that easy, as the veteran doesn't know how long he will race in stock car and how good he would be when the time comes. There have been many drivers that raced well past their 40s, but Kyle Larson is unsure if he can be one of them. One thing is clear though, it will take a lot off convincing to make the veteran attempt the double again.
And then at that point, you know, I know there's been a lot of drivers to be successful there, you know, in their 40s or even beyond. But for me, it's just like, I don't know. I think that'd be a lot to take on. So, I'm thankful for the last two years of being able to attempt it and get to start the race and all of that. But yeah, to do it all over again would be tough to tackle.
Kyle Larson added. While Larson remains on the sidelines, British driver Katherine Legge is ready to make history by becoming the first female racer to do the double. She signed a last-minute deal to drive No. 78 for Live Fast Motorsports at Charlotte and A.J. Foyt Motorsports' No. 11 car at Indy. Larson sees it as an awesome moment for the sport.
Yeah, I mean, first off, I think it'd be awesome if she could do it. I believe first female and only female to have done it. So that would be great. And then, yeah, I mean, just the challenges, as everybody was aware of mine, is just the weather.
Kyle Larson said. The veteran is hoping the Legge will get the opportunity to enjoy the double unlike him, as his attempt were ruined by weather and bad luck. If similar moments don't hamper her race, she could become the first since Tony Stewart to actually finish both the race.
So, yeah, I mean, the driving and whatnot is a challenge in its own, but, you know, ultimately, it's the weather that kind of can put a damper on things if you get any bit of delay. So, yeah, if anybody does do the double in the future, I hope it goes smoother than it did for me and they can enjoy the great race day.
Kyle Larson added. The comments from the veteran racer are on point and shows how challenging the whole event is going to be. The only advantage Legge has though is the fact that unlike Larson, he has less pressure due to less expectations from her due to her age as well as recent performance.
