Mirra Andreeva's title defense at Indian Wells ended with a 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 defeat to Katerina Siniakova in the third round. The win has helped Siniakova reach the fourth round of a WTA 1000 singles event for the seventh time in her career and the first time at Indian Wells.
Andreeva did not take the defeat well at all. She flung her racket in anger, and while leaving Court 1, she screamed, 'f**k you all' toward the crowd.
At the press conference afterward, the 18-year-old said she ended up cursing because she was overwhelmed by emotions and admitted she was not at all proud of how she managed herself.
Andreeva, a two-time WTA 1000 champion, failed to defend both the Indian Wells and the Dubai Tennis Championships. She beat Clara Tauson in Dubai last year, while at Indian Wells, she upset World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. In this year's Dubai event, the Russian ace lost to two-time Grand Slam finalist Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinals.
Siniakova will next be locking horns with Elina Svitolina, who breezed past Ashlyn Krueger. The doubles World No.1 has so far featured in 10 singles finals, winning five titles, the last of which she clinched at the 2023 Jiangxi Open. The last time Andreeva won a singles title was in this year's Adelaide International by defeating Victoria Mboko.
Mirra Andreeva is still a part of Indian Wells as she is also playing doubles with Victoria Mboko. The two teenagers knocked out Hailey Baptiste and Jelena Ostapenko to schedule a quarterfinals clash with Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic.
At the press conference after her singles defeat, Andreeva was asked how she pulled herself back together following the upset to get herself ready for the upcoming doubles quarterfinals.
Yeah, I was just stuck in the locker room, scrolling reels in Instagram, trying to get my mind off of it. Other than that, I was just, yeah, trying to get ready for doubles, because obviously, I mean, I lost my singles match. It's not like I'm going to go on court and tank my doubles because I don't feel like playing.
Andreeva has one doubles title to her name. Last year, she and Diana Shnaider lifted the Miami Open by defeating Cristina Bucsa and Miyu Kato.
I just had to calm down, get ready for doubles, warm up. Then we went on court with Vicky. I just had a lot of fun. It's just nice that we also won the match. It was a real battle out there today, as well. She helped me to feel better a little bit, to at least win the doubles match today. Yeah, with her, it was just easy to kind of forget a little bit about the singles match on the court.
Mirra Andreeva addedThe Canadian ace, who last year clinched the Canadian Open by defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, has scheduled her fourth-round match against Amanda Anisimova, following her straight-set win over Anna Kalinskaya. Mboko will be locking horns with Anisimova for the first time in her career.
Apart from the home event, Mboko also reached the final of this year's Qatar Open but failed to go past Karolina Muchova. So far in her career, Mboko has played four singles finals, winning the Canadian Open and the Hong Kong Open in 2025 and losing this year's Adelaide International and the Qatar Open. She is competing at Indian Wells for the first time in her career.
