"Not Good for Players," Tarik Skubal Strongly Opposes MLB's Proposed $245M Salary Cap

"Not Good for Players," Tarik Skubal Strongly Opposes MLB's Proposed $245M Salary Cap

First Sportz 1 week ago

After years of planning for it, the MLB owners on Thursday finally pushed for a salary cap. However, not everyone is happy with this. Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal strongly opposed this and expressed that it was ' not good for players.

'

On Wednesday, the Major League Baseball Players' Association (MLBPA) initiated the negotiations regarding the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The union put forward some proposals and called for a 'competitive-integrity tax', which would penalize teams that spent less than $150 million.

The league quickly shut down these proposals. A day later, the league proposed a hard salary cap and a salary floor.

As per their proposals, the league will have a salary cap of $245.3 million while having a salary floor of $171.2 million. This is the first time since 1994 that the MLB owners have pushed for a salary cap in the CBA negotiations.

The MLBPA later released a statement regarding this and expressed that they would review these proposals. However, they claimed that a salary cap would offer owners an 'excuse' for 'inaction' and 'mediocrity.'

On Friday, Tarik Skubal spoke with ESPN's Jesse Rogers. The pitcher, who is a member of the union's eight-man executive subcommittee, was not in favor of the salary cap.

It's not good for players. If you ask any other player in any other union, in the other major sports, they would agree, and they would want our CBA structure.

The 2-time American League Cy Young award winner then pointed out the tanking in the NBA and the anti-tank rules they imposed recently.

If you look at the NBA, look at all the tanking that happens in that cap system. They're racing to lose. You think that's a good thing? They just had to implement anti-tank rules. Tell me that cap system's healthy and I'll tell you that it doesn't promote competitive balance.

As of now, the Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are all above the proposed $245 million salary cap. Hypothetically, if this cap does get finalized, then these teams will be forced to cut their payrolls significantly.

The current CBA will expire on December 1, 2026. If the league, team owners, and the MLBPA union are unable to come to an agreement, then a lockout could be on the cards.

After the previous CBA expired in 2021, there was a 99-day lockout as owners locked out the players. This led to a delay in the Spring Training and the start of the 2022 season.

In the past few months, Tarik Skubal has often found his name in trade rumors and speculations. According to an ESPN insider, the San Diego Padres are 'early favorites' to land the southpaw through a trade from the Detroit Tigers.

Skubal, who is in the final year of his contract, will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) unless he and the Tigers can come to a long-term contract extension. The Tigers are currently at the bottom of the AL Central standings with a 22-36 record.

On top of that, they are without Skubal at the moment. Earlier this month, the 29-year-old underwent surgery to remove loose bodies.

Given the current situation of the team, talks of a potential trade of Skubal have started again. As per Buster Olney, the Padres could be the ones who can land him through a trade deal.

I think San Diego is going to get him. They need a starting pitcher. We know AJ Preller, and I say this respectfully, he's a little crazy at this time of year. He makes deals to win the World Series… They make deals to try to win. Skubal would be a fit… My early favorite, the San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers, the Yankees, the Mets, and the Phillies are all in conversations regarding a trade of Skubal. The pitcher is expected to land one of the biggest deals in the upcoming offseason. With the talk of the salary cap, it will be interesting to see what deal he earns.
