Victor Wembanyama's NBA Record 12 Blocks Wasted as Wolves Steal Game 1 in Final Seconds

It has already been established that Victor Wembanyama is an anomaly. He is one of the biggest prospects in NBA history and has a ceiling higher than anyone the NBA has ever seen.

What makes him a rare and special talent is his combination of height, skill, and agility on the court. To add to his rare skillset, he can shoot from range as well.

He had an impressive debut playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round. However, he had a mixed result in the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night.

Wembanyama set the record for most blocks in an NBA Playoff game. He made 12 blocks on the night, but to no avail as the San Antonio Spurs succumbed to a 104-102 defeat to the Wolves at the Frost Bank Center.

Victor Wembanyama broke a 41-year-old record on Monday night. In just his fifth playoff game, he blocked 12 shots and broke the record of 10 blocks shared by Andrew Bynum, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Mark Eaton for most blocks by a player in a single postseason game.

The Frenchman is undoubtedly the best two-way player in the game today. Wembanyama is coming off a historic 2025-26 campaign. Currently just in his third season in the NBA, he became the youngest and the first-ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year winner.

There is no doubt that Wembanyama has already taken the league by storm and is destined to dominate for years to come. Game 1 was a tight affair between two strong sides. The Spurs do not have much playoff experience compared to the Wolves, but with Wemby on their side, they will fancy their chances of bouncing back strongly in the next game.

Victor Wembanyama continues to rewrite defensive records as nobody has ever seen before. His size and agility make him a regular shot blocker. With 12 blocks to his name in Game 1, it was almost impossible to shoot over the 7'4″ center.

However, despite his record-breaking performance, Wolves head coach Chris Finch wasn't so impressed and took a subtle jab at the Frenchman.

He had a lot of blocks, he had a couple of uncalled goaltendings too. Those are valuable points we'd like to have back.

Chris Finch in his post-match press conference

This is not the first time that Finch has taken shots against an opposing team. While he is free to express his opinions, it doesn't take away from the fact that Wembanyama is already one of the greatest defenders to ever play the game. He leads the postseason in blocks with 28 to his name at an average of 5.6 blocks per game.

There is no doubt that Victor Wembanyama is the best defensive player in the world right now and will continue to be so for years to come. However, his offense has taken a significant jump this year. He had his highest-scoring season, averaging 25 points per game over 64 appearances.

After a dominant performance in the first round, Wembanyama looked a bit rusty on the offensive end in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinal. He had a poor shooting night, recording just 11 points in 40 minutes of play. He missed all eight three-point attempts and shot at below 30% from the field.

Some of the credit should be given to his international teammate, Rudy Gobert. The Wolves center had 10 rebounds to go along with four steals and one block. He is coming off a solid first-round series against the Denver Nuggets, where he clamped down on Nikola Jokic. Gobert is finally starting to show the NBA world why he is a four-time DPOY winner.

It is going to be an enthralling matchup between the two French centers. The Wolves have drawn first blood with a road win in Game 1. Wembanyama and the Spurs will be looking to level the series in Game 2 on Wednesday night.
