GUWAHATI: Residents of Guwahati and several parts of the Northeast were left shaken early Tuesday, April 21, after an earthquake was felt across the region.

While the tremors caused brief panic, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to infrastructure.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale and occurred at 5:59 AM IST with its epicentre located in Manipur’s Kamjong district. The seismic activity originated at a depth of around 62 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface, placing it in the category of a moderately deep earthquake.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, with local authorities remaining on alert as a precautionary measure.

The Northeast region, including Assam, falls under a high seismic zone, and earthquakes of moderate to strong intensity are frequent in the area.

The tremor in the northeastern region came just hours after a far more powerful earthquake struck northern Japan. The 7.7-magnitude quake prompted tsunami warnings, with Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirming that a wave of approximately 80 centimetres reached the port city of Kuji in Iwate shortly after the massive jolt.
