Kunki Chowdhury, Assam Jatiya Parishad's candidate contesting from Guwahati Central constituency, has lodged a complaint at the Cyber Police Station in Panbazar, accusing multiple unidentified social media accounts of circulating manipulated videos to defame her and damage her electoral prospects.
In her complaint, Chowdhury stated that several videos, allegedly created using artificial intelligence, are being shared across platforms with the intention of harming her reputation. “These videos are completely fabricated and have been designed to misrepresent me in a malicious way. They are targeting my character, my dignity, and my public image at a crucial time during the elections,” she said.
According to her, the videos have been edited using a clip from a public message she had posted on her official Instagram account on April 2. She alleged that this original video was used as the base to create distorted and misleading content.
The complaint also highlights that the controversy has extended beyond her. Chowdhury claimed that her mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, has also been dragged into the videos. “They have not only targeted me but have also involved my mother in these false narratives. This has caused immense mental distress to my family and has affected our reputation in society,” she stated.
Calling the act a deliberate attempt to influence voters, Chowdhury said the circulation of such content could impact the fairness of the ongoing election process. “This is not just about personal defamation. These videos are being spread in a way that can mislead the public and interfere with the integrity of the elections,” she added.
She has urged the police to take immediate action, identify those responsible, and stop the further spread of the content. “I request the authorities to register an FIR under relevant legal provisions and carry out a thorough investigation. Strict action must be taken against those behind these accounts, and the content should be removed at the earliest,” she said.
The complaint names multiple social media links where the alleged videos were circulated, though the individuals behind the accounts have not yet been identified.
Chowdhury has also pointed out that such actions may fall under offences related to defamation, identity misuse, impersonation, and violations of the Information Technology Act, along with possible breaches of election laws.
“This is a serious misuse of technology. It is an attempt to tarnish my image and wrongfully influence public perception. I am ready to cooperate fully with the investigation and provide any information required,” she said.
The complaint has been submitted to the Officer-in-Charge of Panbazar Cyber Police Station, with a copy also marked to the Superintendent of Police, Guwahati.
Police officials have not yet issued a detailed statement on the complaint.
