GUWAHATI: A 24-year-old MBA student from Assam University is battling for her life after a devastating road accident in Silchar, prompting fellow students to launch a crowdfunding campaign and appeal to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for urgent financial assistance.

Rozy Deb sustained critical injuries on March 28 after being hit by a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver accompanied by two others. According to local residents, the trio appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Bystanders intervened, detained the driver, and handed him over to the police.

However, the accused was granted bail the following day, reportedly aided by what students allege were “influential connections” and a disputed forensic report indicating no alcohol consumption.

Following the accident, Rozy was initially taken to Silchar Civil Hospital and later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where she received treatment at the trauma centre for two days. Medical reports revealed severe, life-altering injuries, including a fractured spinal cord, broken collarbone and ribs, and paralysis in the pelvic region, leaving her with no response in the lower body.

As her condition worsened, her family shifted her to AIIMS Guwahati for advanced care. Doctors there have reportedly indicated that she may never regain the ability to stand or sit independently. Her treatment and rehabilitation are estimated to cost between ₹50 lakh and ₹60 lakh and could take up to three years.

Rozy, described by her peers as a determined and hardworking student, was the sole earning member of her family. Alongside her MBA studies, she supported her household by giving private tuition. On the day of the accident, she was returning home after tutoring sessions.

In a cruel twist of fate, Rozy had recently secured a job offer from Shyam Steel, with the offer letter arriving the same day as the accident. Her classmates say her professional aspirations now hang in the balance, along with her academic future.

“We are doing everything we can—from crowdfunding to reaching out to authorities—but the cost of treatment is overwhelming,” said one of her classmates. “We urge the Chief Minister to intervene and support her treatment. This is beyond what a middle-class family can afford.”

Students have also expressed concern that the accused remains free, alleging a lack of accountability despite the severity of the incident.

With mounting medical expenses and an uncertain recovery ahead, Rozy’s case has sparked calls for both financial aid and justice, as her friends and well-wishers rally to save her life and secure her future.
