Guwahati Braves Rain to Vote in Large Numbers

The issue came to light after Nilakshi Sarma, a resident of House No. 33, took to social media alleging that as many as 16 voters were listed under her address, whereas only four individuals currently reside there. In a video that circulated online, she questioned the authenticity of the electoral entries and sought clarification from the authorities.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the DEO conducted a summary enquiry and issued a public notice addressing the allegations. According to the official statement, the individuals listed under the said address were not newly added to the electoral roll.

The notice stated that several names, including members of the Sarma family and others, were added to the electoral roll in 2014 and 2015 under the then 53-Gauhati East Legislative Assembly Constituency, prior to the delimitation process. The polling station referenced at the time was Lalsingh Academy LP School, under a different polling station number.

Officials clarified that following delimitation and subsequent administrative changes, these entries continued to remain in the records, but no fresh inclusions have been made under House No. 33 in the current electoral roll of the 35-New Guwahati constituency.

Additionally, the Booth Level Officer (BLO) conducted field verification and reported that some of the individuals have been residing in the area for a long time and are not “unknown persons” as alleged.

The clarification comes at a time when electoral transparency remains under close public scrutiny ahead of polling. While the explanation may address the technical aspects of the issue, the incident reflects the growing vigilance among voters regarding electoral integrity in the run-up to the elections.
