GUWAHATI: The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport has taken a significant step forward in sustainable development by securing the prestigious Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) Platinum - Class I Rating, underscoring its growing focus on environmentally responsible operations.
The Guwahati airport has achieved an exceptional waste diversion rate, ensuring that more than 99.9 per cent of its waste does not end up in landfills. This milestone has been made possible through the systematic implementation of the 5R framework — Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and Recover — across its day-to-day functioning.
The ZWL certification process evaluates how efficiently institutions minimise landfill dependency, and LGBI’s performance reflects a robust and well-monitored waste management system. By adopting sustainable practices at scale, the airport has significantly reduced its environmental footprint.
With this recognition, LGBI becomes the fifth airport operated by Adani Airports Holdings Limited to earn the ZWL Platinum distinction. It now joins a select group of airports including those in Thiruvananthapuram, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Lucknow.
In addition to this achievement, the airport has attained Level L3 traceability for its processed waste, ensuring greater transparency and accountability throughout its waste management cycle.
The development highlights the group’s broader push towards sustainable infrastructure and positions the Guwahati airport as a frontrunner in eco-conscious aviation practices in India.
