GUWAHATI: Jewellery markets across Guwahati are witnessing a steady rise in customer footfall on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya, on Sunday, April 19, with shoppers thronging showrooms to purchase gold and silver despite record-high prices.

According to market estimates, the price of 10 grams of gold in Guwahati today stands at approximately ₹1.43 lakh, excluding GST, while one kilogram of pure silver is being sold at around ₹2.65 lakh, also excluding GST. Even with these elevated rates, buyers have been visiting jewellery stores across key commercial hubs such as Fancy Bazar and other parts of the city.

Visuals from various showrooms show customers engaged in selecting necklaces, bangles, and other ornaments, with sales staff attending to multiple buyers at once. The festive atmosphere is evident, with decorated interiors and busy counters indicating the significance of the occasion for both traders and customers.

A seller at Fancy Bazar market said, “The market is seeing a steady rise in the number of buyers on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya despite gold and silver prices rising. A large number of customers have come to buy jewellery for the festival.”

However, not all traders share the same optimism. Another seller, speaking to GPlus, noted, “The market has seen a decline in the number of customers as compared to last year. Increasing gold and silver prices may be attributed to this. However, we cannot predict so early. Half of the day is left and we hope customers will increase in the evening time.”

Several shopkeepers also pointed out that confusion over the exact date of Akshay Tritiya celebrations this year has impacted customer turnout to some extent, with buyers spreading their visits over multiple days.

Customers, meanwhile, expressed a mix of enthusiasm and concern over rising prices.

Rina Agarwal, a homemaker who visited a Fancy Bazaar based showroom in the city, said, “We wait for Akshay Tritiya every year to buy at least a small piece of gold. Prices are very high this time, but we still bought a pair of earrings considering the auspiciousness of the day.”

Another buyer, Amit Sharma, who was shopping with his family, said, “Gold has become expensive, but it is also a long-term investment. We decided to purchase a chain today as it is believed to bring prosperity.”

Akshay Tritiya holds deep cultural and religious significance in Hindu and Jain tradition . Considered one of the most auspicious days of the year, it is believed that any investment or new venture undertaken on this day brings lasting prosperity and success. Buying gold and silver on Akshay Tritiya is a long-standing custom, symbolizing wealth, good fortune, and eternal growth, which continues to drive demand in jewellery markets despite fluctuating prices.
