The final rites, conducted as per Vedic traditions, marked the close of an extraordinary musical journey that shaped Indian cinema and culture for over eight decades.

The ceremony unfolded in an atmosphere of deep grief and reverence. A police contingent accorded her a formal gun salute with a three-round volley, followed by the haunting notes of the “Last Post,” as family members, admirers, and dignitaries stood in silence. The veteran singer had passed away a day earlier at Breach Candy Hospital at the age of 92.
Her final journey from her Lower Parel residence to Dadar turned into a moving public tribute. The cortege vehicle, elegantly adorned with white and yellow flowers—her favourites—carried her mortal remains through packed streets, as thousands gathered to pay their last respects. A prominent photograph of the singer, wearing her signature Maharashtrian ‘nath’, was placed on the vehicle, symbolising her cultural roots and timeless charm.
In a deeply evocative gesture, her body was transported on a flower-laden chariot decorated with marigolds and white blooms. The chariot also displayed cherished images from different phases of her life, capturing her enduring smile and unmatched legacy. As it moved slowly through the city, mourners lined the route, offering flowers and folding their hands in a final salute to the voice that defined generations.
Residents watched from balconies and roadside lanes, while a police band played sombre tunes, underscoring the gravity of the moment. With her passing, an unparalleled chapter in Indian music draws to a close, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to echo across time.
