GUWAHATI: Residents of Guwahati's Athgaon locality have been grappling with severe waterlogging as overflowing drains in the Alugodam area have led to what locals describe as an 'artificial flood,' disrupting daily life and raising health concerns.
According to residents, the situation has persisted for nearly a week, with stagnant water accumulating on roads due to clogged drains. Locals allege that repeated complaints to authorities have failed to bring about any tangible relief.
MD Tauqueer, a shopkeeper in the area, said, “It has been around five days since water has accumulated on the road due to overflowing drains. It is creating a bad smell and also leads to many health issues.”
Regular commuters also expressed frustration over the worsening conditions. Niraj Kumar Jain, who frequently passes through the stretch, highlighted the difficulties faced by pedestrians. “People, especially women in the area, suffer a lot. Those who walk through the stretch face serious problems,” he said, adding that locals have lodged multiple complaints with the ward councillor but no action has been taken so far.
The issue has also impacted livelihoods. Kartik Swargiyari, a delivery worker, pointed out the risks posed by the waterlogged roads. “The overflowing drains produce a foul smell which is unbearable. Whenever the water level rises, we fear it might splash into our delivery bags and damage the items. The authorities must act soon,” he said.
Responding to the concerns, ward councillor Saurabh Jhunjhunwala stated that measures have been initiated to clean the drains in their ward. However, he attributed the recurring problem to improper waste disposal by residents. “Many people tend to throw garbage into the drains, leading to blockages. We are helpless when the public does not cooperate,” he said.
Despite the assurances, residents of Athgaon’s Alugodam area continue to endure unhygienic conditions, hoping for swift and effective intervention to resolve the issue before it escalates further.
