GUWAHATI: The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), led by Pradyot Debbarma, registered a landslide victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections on Friday, April 17, winning 24 out of 28 seats, according to the State Election Commission (SEC).
This marks the party’s second consecutive win since its formation in 2020, reinforcing its strong support base among Tripura’s tribal communities. The council administers nearly 70% of the state’s geographical area and serves a population of around 15 lakh people.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured four seats, while counting in five constituencies is still underway. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress failed to win any seats for the second consecutive time in the council polls.
According to SEC official Bipul Barman, results for 28 seats have been declared so far, with TMP winning 24 and BJP four.
Reacting to the victory, Debbarma said the mandate increases the party’s responsibility. In a social media post, he called for unity and peace, urging elected members to work for the community, the state, and the country, while appealing for non-violence.
Although allies, the BJP and TMP contested the elections separately. Senior BJP leader Ratan Lal Nath acknowledged the party’s weak performance, stating that voter sentiment played a key role in the outcome.
Polling for the 28-member council was held on April 12, recording a voter turnout of 83.50%, higher than the 81% turnout in the 2021 elections. A total of 173 candidates were in the fray.
In the 2021 TTAADC polls, TMP had won 18 seats with a vote share of 46.70%, while the BJP secured nine seats with 29.30% of the votes.
