GUWAHATI: Assam recorded a voter turnout of 59.63% by 1 PM on Thursday, April 9, as polling continued across the state for the Legislative Assembly elections, indicating strong public participation and a steady rise from the morning hours.
Assam Records 38.92% Voter Turnout by 11 AM; Kamrup Metro at 31.87%
However, in Kamrup Metropolitan district, the turnout remained noticeably lower than the state average. The district recorded an approximate turnout of 49.47% by early afternoon, reflecting a slower polling pace.
Among the five Assembly constituencies in Kamrup Metro, Dimoria emerged as the frontrunner with a voter turnout of 53.17%, closely followed by Jalukbari at 53.04%. Both constituencies showed relatively better participation, keeping up with the broader upward trend witnessed across the state.
Dispur recorded a turnout of 47.28%, while Guwahati Central stood slightly higher at 48.30%. New Guwahati registered the lowest turnout in the district at 45.35%, continuing the trend of comparatively subdued voter participation in urban pockets.
Election officials noted that while the turnout in metropolitan areas often lags behind rural regions due to factors such as workday commitments and urban apathy, polling is expected to pick up in the later hours of the day.
Authorities have ensured extensive arrangements across polling stations, including security deployment and voter facilitation measures, to ensure smooth and peaceful voting. Long queues were reported at several booths in the morning, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas.
The Election Commission is closely monitoring the situation, and no major incidents disrupting polling have been reported so far.
