Tornado Emergency Declared in Knox
On Tuesday evening, a significant and highly dangerous tornado was confirmed near Knox, Indiana, leading the National Weather Service to issue a Tornado Warning for central Starke County until 9:00 PM CDT. Weather observers verified the presence of the destructive tornado, which was advancing eastward at approximately 30 mph.
A rare Tornado Emergency was subsequently declared for Knox, a small town with a population of around 3,700, as the storm posed a threat of catastrophic destruction, including hail the size of tennis balls and risks to over 6,500 residents, three schools, and a hospital.
Officials cautioned that residents faced a life-threatening scenario, with flying debris potentially causing fatalities and mobile homes at high risk of being obliterated. Significant damage to residences, businesses, and vehicles was anticipated, with the tornado moving toward Knox and surrounding areas such as Brems, Toto, and Bass Lake. Residents were strongly advised to seek immediate shelter, particularly since tornadoes are notoriously hard to spot at night.
Earlier in the day, a powerful supercell developed near Pontiac, Illinois, traveling over 100 miles through the region. It wreaked havoc along Interstate 57, producing hail in Kankakee, damaging a solar farm, and moving close to Greater Kankakee Airport and Aroma Park before entering Indiana. Authorities reported that search and rescue efforts were ongoing in various locations along the storm's trajectory due to severe structural damage, while residents in Knox and nearby communities were urged to take cover without delay.
