The Legend of Golden Lanka

In the epic tale of Ramayana, the mention of the golden Lanka is quite prominent, often associated with the demon king Ravana.

It is said that this Lanka was truly constructed of gold, showcasing unparalleled beauty. However, it was ultimately destroyed by Lord Hanuman, who set it ablaze. This part of the story is well-known to many.

Who Created the Golden Lanka?

But do you know who actually built this golden Lanka and for whom? Surprisingly, this magnificent structure was not originally Ravana's; he acquired it through deceit.

Constructed by Lord Shiva for Goddess Parvati

According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Shiva created the golden Lanka for Goddess Parvati. Although they lived a simple life in the Himalayas and were content without a grand palace, the sight of the opulent abodes of other deities sparked a desire in Parvati to have a palace of her own. Consequently, she requested Lord Shiva to construct a palace akin to those of the gods.

Ravana's Deceptive Acquisition of the Golden Lanka

Lord Shiva, unable to refuse Parvati's request, summoned Vishwakarma and Kubera to build a magnificent palace in the middle of the ocean. This palace soon became known as the golden Lanka, and its fame spread far and wide. During the Ramayana era, Ravana happened to pass by this golden Lanka and was instantly captivated by its splendor. His greed took over, and he resolved to possess it.

Ravana's Trickery

Disguising himself as a Brahmin, Ravana approached Lord Shiva and requested the golden Lanka as a gift. Unable to deny a Brahmin, Lord Shiva granted his wish, allowing Ravana to deceitfully claim the golden Lanka. According to another version of the tale, Ravana forcibly took the golden Lanka from Kubera, the god of wealth. Ultimately, Ravana did not create this Lanka; he seized it from others.
