Prime Minister Narendra Modi then presented a pack of Melody toffees to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni while he was in Italy recently. Initially, it seemed like a harmless skit, but within no time it went viral online and has sparked the renowned “Melodi” meme once again.

The word “Melodi” is made up of the name Modi and Meloni. Popularized on social media platforms following amicable experiences shared by the two leaders during international forums like the G20 Summit and COP28. The public interactions eventually became so common among internet users that they started posting, reeling and mashing memes about it.

This time the meme was even more special thanks to the Melody toffee gift. The Indian PM gifted the chocolates to the Italian Prime Minister as a light-hearted nod to the viral nickname during Modi's visit to Rome with Meloni.Modi gifted the chocolates to Meloni in Rome as a lighthearted nod to the viral nickname. The viral video of the meeting was been shared on social media and several people thought it was the nicest moment between countries this year.

People in India have loved Caramel Toffee with Chocolate since the 1980s. For lots of Indians it reminds them of when they were kids. There was a popular song on TV that asked Melody itni chocolaty kyun hai? This song was special to people so the gift was more about feelings than being formal. The meeting between the two leaders was not about funny pictures and Caramel Toffee, with Chocolate.

For diplomatic and business reasons, Modi's visit to Italy was important as well. India and Italy signed an agreement to deepen the relationship between the countries as a “Special Strategic Partnership”. They talked about cooperation in trade, defence, technology, manufacturing and transport.

Both sides also hope to boost their trade relationship to €20 billion by 2029, it was reported. During the visit negotiations took place on several agreements relating to agriculture and education, maritime transport and economic cooperation.

The attention of the internet, however, came to an attention with the Melody toffee. Jokes and memes were posted everywhere and videos were edited to fit. The leaders were also referred to by one user as “Team Melodi”, and other users complimented the diplomacy that can also involve humor and gestures of goodwill.

Believe it or not, India's confectionery industry got attention during the viral moment as well. India has exported toffee with a strongened growth rate in last 10 years as per recent reports. Experts say this kind of scenario could be beneficial for brands in India too to get a wider exposure.

The “Melodi” theme is a reflection of diplomacy in the era of social media. Diplomatic meetings were primarily formal and serious earlier. In today's world, anything and everything can be a talking point around the world and a way to engage the younger generation online.

Previously a meme, it has now turned into a symbol of radiating relations between Italy and India. A fair dribble of these toffees was a regular Indian candy and with one packet it got a place in international diplomacy.
