Why is “Cockroach Janta Party” trending? Viral movement explained

New Delhi: The satirical online “Cockroach Janta Party” (CJP) has made itself headline news on social media in India this week. The group emerged after killer comments by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant grabbed attention on social media. In mere days it had thousands of followers, even politicians like Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad came forward to support him.

The issue began when statements at a court hearing were picked up in the media and posted widely online. The Chief Justice's remarks that some unemployed youth and activists are “cockroaches,” and “parasites” were reported.

Soon the comments were subjected to criticism on social media platforms from many who stated its language was insulting towards the young people affected by unemployment.

Right after the backlash CJI Surya Kant clarified that his comments were not being understood. His comments were for those who were using "fake" degrees, not for the working class of youth in general, he said. He also reportedly said that his words were “misquoted” and out of context.

By then however, the internet had already made the issue a viral meme movement. The Cockroach Janta Party was created as a tongue-in-cheek digital campaign, and sarcasm was used to reply to the comments. The group labels itself “a political front of the youth, by the youth, for the youth,” and aims to grab people's attention with funny slogans and Facebook posts.

The Trinamool Congress leaders Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad talked to the page on the internet. This made the movement more popular. Kirti Azad made jokes about people asking if they are good enough to be in the Trinamool Congress party. Mahua Moitra joined the campaign on media. They helped people see the trend on social media platforms like X and Instagram.

Some people say that the funny group got, than 40,000 members in just two days of being around. Some of the social media users have embraced it as a jocular form of protest against the unemployment and political disenchantment and the public utterances of great personalities.

Despite the fact that the Cockroach Janta Party is not an actual political party, the sudden craze for it reveals that a humorous blog can be transformed into a serious discussion in India's public sphere in a matter of days. A joke that has turned into a symbol of protest and youth frustration on the Internet.
